Common FAQs
Who is a candidate for Cosmetic Gynecologic surgery?
Any woman who is not satisfied with the look, feel or function of their vulvar or vaginal area, may be a candidate for cosmetic gynecologic surgery, also known as aesthetic vaginal surgery. Many patients explain feeling as if they have something that might not be quite right or that something has changed down there.
They may complain of:
-
Enlarged or asymmetric labia that rub or pull
-
Swelling, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation of the vulvar area
-
The unpleasing appearance of the vulva
-
Increased incidence of infections or irritation
-
Vaginal laxity due to childbirth, weight changes, or health conditions
-
Lost tissue and muscle tautness
-
A wider vaginal opening with loss of sensation with intimacy
-
Embarrassment in sexual situations with the look, feel, or function of the vulva/vagina
-
Bulging of tissue in the vagina
-
Difficulty with bladder or bowels
-
A small, tight vaginal opening that causes pain and/or bleeding with intercourse
Do the benefits outweigh the risks?
We think so! If you are unhappy with your vulva/vagina, improving the appearance and function of this area is important for your body image and overall health. Choosing a highly trained Cosmetic Gynecologist in Dehradun, who understands and is dedicated to the intimate female anatomy, reduces the chance of risks immensely. Infection, blood loss, organ injury, medication reactions, anesthesia complications, and being unhappy with results, are rare complications of these types of surgeries, but can occur, and are important risk factors to consider with any surgical procedures.
What can I expect during my consult visit?
You will meet with Dr. Sumita Prabhakar your aesthetic vaginal surgeon in a comfortable consultation room to discuss your concerns, desires, and questions. After discussing your individual needs, you may review some of our before and after photos and/or illustrations to better understand the procedures and see real results.
You will then have an exam of the area involved. This allows you and Dr. Sumita to discuss your individual issues and desires for change.
If you decide to move forward with surgery, we will fix a date of surgery and provide you with the information useful for pre and post-operative planning.
What can I expect my recovery to be like?
Amazingly, labiaplasty or vaginoplasty patients may be able to return to work and their normal routine in as little as 1 week. Undergoing multiple procedures may take you more time to recover before you feel ready to return to life as usual. Much depends on the types of procedures you have, and the type of things you do! You will be on pelvic rest for a few days and can expect complete healing to take place in about two to three weeks.
How will aesthetic vulvo-vaginal surgery affect my sex life?
This depends on the patient, the type of surgery, and the reason for the surgery. Most times, your sex life will be impacted in a positive way. By improving the look, feel, and/or function of this area, most women experience an improvement in their self-esteem making them more willing to engage in spontaneous relations. Vaginoplasty will increase the friction during intercourse, thus, enhancing sensation for you and your partner. Labiaplasty reduces the size of the labia, so if larger labia were interfering with intercourse, this will likely alleviate that problem. All in all, women seem to be very satisfied after aesthetic vaginal surgery, indicating a positive affect on their sex life.
What Is a Labiaplasty?
A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure in which the labia is reshaped or restructured. Labiaplasty can be done on the inner labia lips (the labia minora), the outer labia lips (the labia majora), or both. The purpose of the surgery is to reduce excess tissue and create the look and feel that the patient wants to have. Labiaplasty usually takes around one hour.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Labiaplasty?
Most women who opt for labiaplasty have large, irregularly shaped, or uneven labia lips. If one of these problems causes pain during intercourse, irritation during exercise, or an undesirable appearance, a labiaplasty can be a good solution. Many women who suffer from problems like an oversized or irregularly shaped labia have intense embarrassment as a result. They may even avoid intimacy or wearing certain types of clothing as a result. A labiaplasty can greatly improve the appearance and can alleviate embarrassment and other issues.
Can labial reduction surgery be reversed?
No. After labiaplasty, we are unable to replace what has been removed. It is possible to make some modifications post-operatively to achieve the look or feel you may desire. It would be very difficult to reconstruct the labia minora completely. This is why it is so important to seek out a highly qualified aesthetic vulvo-vaginal surgeon and to feel comfortable communicating your desires to help insure your satisfaction postoperatively.
Can I have a vaginal delivery after aesthetic vaginal surgery?
Absolutely. There are no contraindications to vaginal birth after cosmetic vaginal surgery but there are some practical concerns. With a vaginal delivery, the vaginal and vulvar tissues are stretched and may tear. While these can be repaired and will heal after the delivery, the tissues may not look, feel, or function as they did before your delivery.
Does aesthetic vulvo-vaginal surgery damage nerves and make it difficult to become aroused?
No, patients do not complain of numbness or difficulty achieving arousal after these types of surgery. The labia are not as important when it comes to arousal as the clitoris or G-spot. Most patients are as satisfied or more satisfied with their sexual arousal after these types of surgeries.
